Gutter cleaning in Bluffton is a bigger job than it looks from the driveway. Live oaks and magnolias shed old leaves in spring, pines drop needles in fall, and Spanish moss lands wherever the wind leaves it. A&A Island Services has cleared Lowcountry gutters for 20+ years, with the owner on site for every job.

A full cleaning is more than scooping out the troughs. It means hand clearing, bagged debris, flushed downspouts and a check of every hanger, seam and slope. Call (843) 505-1389 for a free estimate.

What Gutter Cleaning in Bluffton Includes

Every A&A cleaning follows the same checklist, from one-story ranches to three-story homes on the marsh.

  • Hand clearing. Leaves, needles, cones, moss and packed sludge come out of every run, corners and outlets included.
  • Bagged debris. It goes into bags, not onto your shrubs, beds or patio.
  • Flushed downspouts. Each one is flushed and cleared at the top outlet and bottom elbow. Crushed or undersized ones are covered on our downspouts page.
  • Hanger, seam and pitch check. We look for loose hangers, leaking seams and runs that hold water because the slope is off.
  • Roof-edge check. We look at the drip edge, fascia and eave shingles for rot, gaps or damage.
  • A plain report. You hear what we found, and if something needs fixing, we explain your gutter repair options.

Two-story, three-story and steep roofs

Tall rooflines, steep pitches and gutters over decks or pools are where homeowners get hurt. CPSC staff estimate that ladders and stools were involved in about 273,000 emergency department visits in 2024. The CPSC advises extending a ladder at least 3 feet above the roofline, setting it at about a 75-degree angle and staying off the top three rungs. A second-story gutter has you reaching sideways with a bucket, which breaks most of those rules. Leave anything above one story to a pro.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning, and What Waiting Costs

Clogs rarely show until a storm. Walk the house during the next hard rain and look for these.

Water spilling over the front edge

If water sheets over the lip instead of running to the downspout, something is blocking the flow. That overflow lands beside your foundation and splashes dirt onto the siding. Water that keeps pooling at the footing soaks the soil and, on a crawlspace home, can work its way under the house.

Soft, stained or peeling fascia

The fascia board behind your gutter stays dry only when the gutter drains. A clogged trough holds wet leaves against the wood until the paint peels and the board softens. Clemson Extension notes that termites prefer moist or decayed wood, and Formosan subterranean termites occur mainly in coastal counties like ours.

Standing water and mosquitoes

A gutter that never drains is a mosquito nursery. Clemson's Home and Garden Information Center lists clogged gutters and downspouts among overlooked breeding sites, notes that water standing five days or more can breed mosquitoes, and says some species need only a tablespoon. A sagging run in July holds far more.

Sagging runs and sprouting seedlings

Wet leaves, needles and sludge are heavy. A full gutter pulls on its hangers until a run sags, and then it holds even more water. Grass or pine seedlings growing up there mean the debris has turned to soil. Cleaning on schedule costs less than rehanging a gutter later.

How It Works

How a Gutter Cleaning Visit Works

Here is what to expect from the first call to the final walk-around.

  1. Call for a free estimate

Call (843) 505-1389, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM. Tell us the address, how many stories the house has and which trees hang over the roof. That is what we need for a free estimate.

  2. Set up with care

Ladders go on firm, level ground and stay off weak gutter sections. We work around your beds, shrubs and outdoor furniture. Tall or steep roofs take longer to set up safely, and we take that time.

  3. Clear and bag by hand

Every run is cleared by hand from end to end, including inside corners and the area around each outlet, where clogs start. Debris goes straight into bags instead of across your lawn.

  4. Flush and test

We run water through each gutter and downspout to confirm it drains. Slow spots show where the pitch is off or a seam leaks. Stubborn downspouts get extra work at the outlet and elbow.

  5. Inspect and report

Last, we check hangers, seams, fascia and the roof edge, then walk you through what we found. If a repair makes sense, you get a plain explanation and a free estimate, with no pressure to decide that day.

Options

How Often to Clean Gutters in the Lowcountry

This Old House recommends cleaning gutters twice a year. Many Bluffton homes need more, because local trees drop something in almost every season.

  • Spring: Clemson Extension notes that live oaks hold their leaves through winter, then drop them as new leaves expand. Their stringy catkins fall in spring too, and southern magnolias shed many of their oldest leaves. Pine pollen turns the mix to sludge.
  • Fall: Pines drop interior needles. Clemson puts loblolly needles at 6 to 10 inches and the cones at 3 to 6 inches, big enough to plug a downspout outlet.
  • Year-round: Spanish moss hangs from live oaks and pines and drops into gutters whenever wind tears it loose.
Your lotSuggested schedule
Few or no trees near the roofTwice a year, in late spring and late fall
Some oaks or pines near the houseThree times a year, adding one before late summer
Live oak or pine canopy over the roofThree to four times a year, or add micro-mesh gutter guards

Timing matters as much as frequency. NOAA's National Hurricane Center puts the Atlantic season at June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. A clean system going into late summer gives tropical rain somewhere to go.

Cost

What Gutter Cleaning Costs

Price depends on the number of stories, the linear feet of gutter, how packed the debris is and how many downspouts need flushing. This Old House, using 2026 Angi estimates, puts the national average at about $275 per visit. Its figures run $100 to $250 for one-story homes, $180 to $360 for two stories and $210 to $450 for three. It also notes that pine needles and compacted wet leaves take longer to remove.

Those are national numbers, not our prices. For an exact figure on your home, call (843) 505-1389. A&A's estimates are always free.

Gutter Cleaning Under Bluffton's Live Oaks

Beaufort County's comprehensive plan names live oaks and Spanish moss among the symbols of the region, and some of Bluffton's best-known communities are planned around them. Palmetto Bluff describes its setting as sheltered beneath century-old live oaks. Belfair, on the mainland near the Colleton River, opens with a half-mile oak-lined drive. Clemson Extension says an open-grown live oak can spread 60 to 100 feet wide, so one tree can shade most of a roof.

That canopy is why gutter cleaning in Bluffton runs on a different calendar than in most of the country. The heaviest drop comes in spring, when the oaks trade old leaves for new ones, not in October. For oak-heavy lots, we plan one cleaning after the spring drop and another before the peak of hurricane season, then adjust once we see how fast your trees refill the gutters.

Why A&A

Why Bluffton Homeowners Choose A&A for Gutter Cleaning

20+ Years

Two decades of Lowcountry gutters

A&A has spent more than 20 years installing and servicing gutters in the Lowcountry. That time teaches you where clogs hide: inside corners, outlets under roof valleys, the bottom elbow of a downspout tucked behind a shrub. It also teaches you which trees fill gutters fastest and when, so the schedule we suggest fits your lot, not a national rule of thumb.

Owner On Every Job

The owner is on site for every cleaning

Every A&A job has the owner on site. The person who answers for the work is the one looking at your gutters, checking the hangers and pitch, and explaining what turned up. You are not handed a checklist by someone you never meet. It also keeps the standard the same from the first house of the week to the last.

100% Satisfaction

Guaranteed work from a licensed, insured company

Every cleaning is backed by A&A's 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if something is not right, call us and we will make it right. A&A is also licensed and insured. Gutter cleaning is ladder work on someone else's house, which is exactly the kind of job you want in the hands of a properly covered company, not a neighbor with a borrowed ladder.

FAQ

Gutter Cleaning FAQ

How often should gutters be cleaned in Bluffton?

Most homes here do best with two to four cleanings a year. Lots with few trees can get by with late spring and late fall. If live oaks or pines hang over the roof, add a cleaning before the peak of hurricane season, which NOAA puts between mid-August and mid-October.

Can I clean my own gutters?

On a one-story house with level ground for a ladder, many homeowners do. Follow the CPSC's advice: extend the ladder at least 3 feet above the roofline, set it at about a 75-degree angle, have someone hold the base and never stand on the top three rungs. On two-story, three-story or steep roofs, or anywhere near power lines, hire a pro.

Why do my gutters still overflow after a cleaning?

If a clog was the cause, cleaning fixes it. If water still spills, the gutter may be too small for the roof above it, pitched the wrong way, or fed by a valley that sends more water than one outlet can take. We check for all of those during the visit and explain the fix, from adding a downspout to a repair or replacement.

Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean again?

No. Guards cut down on cleaning, but they do not end it. A 2025 This Old House survey found that after installing guards, 41 percent of homeowners still clean once a year. Micro-mesh guards keep pine needles and oak leaves out of the trough, but the mesh surface still needs an occasional brushing or rinse, especially after pollen season.
