Downspouts in Bluffton move a whole roof's worth of rain to a few spots on the ground, and on flat, sandy Lowcountry lots those spots matter. A downspout that clogs, pulls loose or empties at the slab leaves water sitting against your foundation. A&A Island Services clears, repairs, resizes and adds them.

Downspout Services in Bluffton, SC

We handle downspouts in Bluffton from the gutter outlet to the ground.

  • Clearing clogs at the top outlet and bottom elbow, then flushing the line.
  • Re-securing loose straps and brackets and reseating elbows that have pulled apart.
  • Resizing from 2x3 to 3x4 under large roof sections and valleys.
  • Adding downspouts to long runs that overflow at the far end.
  • Extensions and splash blocks that carry water away and stop washouts.
  • Underground drain line hookups that move water out of sight.

If the gutters themselves are too small for your roof, see gutter installation.

Warning Signs

Signs a Downspout Needs Work

Check these during the next heavy rain.

Overflow right above the outlet

If the gutter spills over just above a downspout while the rest of the run is fine, the downspout is blocked or too small for the water reaching it. A quick flush with a hose tells us which, and the fix is usually simple.

A silent downspout in a downpour

Lay a hand on the downspout during hard rain. You should hear and feel water moving. Silence, or a trickle at the bottom while the gutter overflows, means a clog, usually at the top outlet or in the bottom elbow.

Loose straps and split joints

Wind, ladders, mowers and trapped water all work downspouts loose. When straps let go, sections pull apart and water sprays out at the joints, often straight onto the siding. Re-securing and resealing is a small job that stops the damage early.

Washouts, puddles or a damp crawlspace

Bare dirt, a trench in the mulch or a puddle that lingers means water is landing too close. This Old House warns that it can collect at the foundation, seep into a crawl space and lead to mold, insects or rot.

How It Works

How We Fix a Downspout Problem

Four steps, start to finish.

  1. Call and describe the problem

Call (843) 505-1389, Monday to Friday, and describe where the water misbehaves: overflow at one corner, a puddle by the porch, a damp crawlspace. That call is the start of your free estimate.

  2. Test with water

We run water into the gutter above each problem downspout and watch where it slows, backs up or leaks. That separates a clog from a loose joint, an undersized pipe or a discharge point too close to the house.

  3. Clear, repair or resize

Clogs come out by hand, followed by a flush. Straps get refastened, separated sections reseated and crushed pieces replaced. If the pipe is too small for the roof above it, we upgrade to 3x4 or add a second downspout.

  4. Extend and recheck

Then we carry the water away with an extension, splash block or underground line, run water through the finished system one last time and show you where each downspout now drains.

Options

Downspout Sizes and Where the Water Goes

2x3 or 3x4? Texas A&M AgriLife's rainwater guide allows one square inch of downspout per 100 square feet of roof, so a 2x3 serves about 600 square feet and a 3x4 about 1,200. The USGS puts one inch of rain on an acre at 27,154 gallons, roughly 620 gallons per 1,000 square feet of roof. NOAA Atlas 14 estimates that Bluffton sees about 2.1 inches in one hour roughly every other year. That is around 1,300 gallons off 1,000 square feet in an hour, too much for one small downspout.

Cost

What Downspout Work Costs

A cleared clog and a new 3x4 downspout with a buried line are very different jobs. Fixr's national cost guide puts downspout installation at $15 to $28 per linear foot, extensions at $2 to $17 and splash blocks from about $6 for plastic to $85 for bronze. Height, elbows and drain line length all move the price. These are national figures, not A&A prices. For a number on your home, call (843) 505-1389. Estimates are free.

Why Downspouts Work Harder in Bluffton

Bluffton's lots give water few places to go. Beaufort County's comprehensive plan describes the county as generally flat and low-lying, points to high water tables and sandy soils, and says NRCS classifies 73 percent of county soils as hydric, with low infiltration and high runoff potential. On a flat yard, water from a short downspout does not run off. It spreads out and sits.

Rain also comes in bursts. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Beaufort MCAS put 17.06 of the year's 45.02 inches in June through August, with August the wettest month at 6.50 inches. Whether your house is on a slab or over a crawlspace, the answer for downspouts in Bluffton is the same: right-sized downspouts and discharge points carried well clear of the foundation.

Why A&A

Why Bluffton Homeowners Choose A&A for Downspouts

Any Make or Model

We fix the system you have

A&A repairs gutter systems of any make or model, downspouts included, so one bad downspout does not mean a whole new system. When a section can be saved, we save it. When it cannot, we tell you plainly and explain why. Gutters are all we do, so downspouts get real attention instead of a quick patch on the way out.

5-Star Rated

Small jobs done with care

A&A is 5-star rated, and we earn that on small jobs as much as big ones. A downspout fix is rarely glamorous: a strap, an elbow, a few feet of pipe in the right place. Doing it right means testing with water, checking every joint and making sure the discharge lands where it should. A single downspout gets the same care as a full install.

What Customers Say About Our Downspouts

Five-star Google reviews from Lowcountry homeowners.

Andrey and his crew installed gutters on the side of my house. They were very professional. They also installed gutter guards and they work great. We had almost 8" of rain one evening and they kept the water well away from our house. I highly recommend them.

A & A Island Services showed up when they said they would. The installers showed up in a clean well marked vehicle. They were knowledgeable and courteous. They installed new gutters and downspouts in an efficient manner and left the grounds clean. I could not find fault with anything and recommend them unconditionally.
Tony O'BrienGoogle review
We had them install new gutters and gutter protectors around our house. We had many quotes and his was the most reasonable one. They came and did an outstanding job. They are kind, neat, clean and professional.

FAQ

Downspouts FAQ

Should I upgrade from 2x3 to 3x4 downspouts?

If a downspout drains a big roof section or a valley, or the gutter overflows near the outlet even when clean, a 3x4 is usually worth it. By Texas A&M's rule of thumb, it handles twice the roof area of a 2x3.

How far from the house should a downspout drain?

Far enough that water soaks in or drains away instead of pooling at the foundation. This Old House says above-ground extensions typically run 4 to 5 feet. On flat Bluffton lots, farther is often better, and an underground line can carry water to a spot where it can spread out.

Can you connect my downspouts to an underground drain?

Yes. We hook downspouts into buried drain lines so water leaves the house out of sight. A buried line needs a clean gutter above it and an outlet that stays open, so we check the whole path first. If your yard has no good place for the water, we will say so.

Why does my downspout keep clogging?

Usually because the gutter above it is full. Live oak leaves and catkins in spring, and pine needles and cones in fall, wash down and jam the first elbow. Regular gutter cleaning fixes most repeat clogs, and under heavy trees, micro-mesh gutter guards keep debris out of the downspout to begin with.
