Gutter repair in Beaufort often begins after a storm or a falling branch. Live oak limbs reach far out over rooflines across the city, and one strong gust during a summer storm or hurricane season can drop a limb across a gutter run. We work on gutters of any make or model, with the owner on site from start to finish. For a free estimate, call (843) 505-1389.
Storm Damage and Old-House Failures We Repair in Beaufort
Beaufort's storm record explains much of the damage we see. During Hurricane Matthew on October 8, 2016, the National Weather Service logged a 62-knot gust at Beaufort MCAS and 14.04 inches of rain at a Beaufort gauge, along with scattered tree damage around the city. The next year, WIS reported that Irma's surge on top of a high tide hit The Point hard and left three to four feet of water along parts of the sea wall. Further back, the city's preservation manual records an 1893 hurricane that blew the roofs off several houses. Clemson Extension notes that mature live oaks spread 60 to 100 feet wide on massive horizontal limbs, so a broken branch can land on a gutter well away from the trunk.
Older houses also fail in their own ways. The Beaufort Preservation Manual warns that the weight of wet debris can pull a gutter away from the building, and that leaks rot the fascia and the framing behind it. It cautions against spiking a gutter into a good cornice and recommends gutter hangers made for the purpose instead.
The fix has to suit the house. The manual says rotted gutters should be replaced to match the sound sections in material and profile, and the city's minor review form lists in-kind repairs on contributing and non-contributing structures for staff-level review. If you are thinking about a different material, talk with the city first.
